After over 16 hours of being trapped at a depth of 39 feet, the 10-year-old child who fell into a borewell in Raghogarh, Guna district, passed away just hours after being rescued. An autopsy has been ordered for the child’s body.

The boy—who was named as Sumit Meena—was saved by NDRF and health department workers. Although he was taken in an ambulance right away to the district hospital, his condition was listed as critical. The infant died soon after being taken to the hospital, despite efforts to stabilize him.

On Saturday night, Sumit, a native of Pipliya hamlet in Raghogarh, slipped into the ancient borewell as he was out, flying a kite. His family and the local villagers started looking for him after he went missing for a long time. They informed the authorities when they noticed his head above the borewell pit’s surface.

After a rescue crew arrived on the scene, excavation got underway using a Pokelane machine and two JCBs. Two more JCBs were brought in to help as the night wore on. Throughout the night, the rescue crew dug a 45-foot pit by hand, parallel to the borewell.

Throughout the operation, oxygen was being supplied through a pipe to keep child stable. The location was visited by Collector Dr. Satendra Singh and other administrative officers. Doctors and a medical team were waiting. But soon after being taken to the hospital, the kid passed away from his wounds, despite the heroic rescue effort.

“The precise cause of the child’s death would only be determined after postmortem,” stated Guna SP Sanjeev Sinha.
