Wardha Khadi Gramodyog Gandhi Ashram Maharashtra
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Wardha in the Wardha district of Maharashtra was the base from which Mahatma Gandhi directed the Indian independence movement from his Sevagram Ashram from 1936 to 1948. Wardha became the intellectual and practical headquarters of Gandhi economic programme of Khadi and Village Industries, developing the charkha spinning wheel into a symbol of self-reliance and nonviolent resistance. The Wardha Khadi cooperative movement centred on Sevagram and Paunar Ashrams maintains the Khadi production tradition as a living practice rather than heritage. Acharya Vinoba Bhave continued Gandhi work from Paunar Ashram after independence. Wardha district cooperatives produce hand-spun cotton khadi cloth, khadi denim, and organic cotton garments under social enterprise labels. Wardha produces cotton as a key cash crop on the black cotton soil of Vidarbha, linking the raw material directly to the Khadi cooperative processing chain. The Magan Sangrahalaya museum in Wardha preserves traditional village industry tools and techniques.
