Vidarbha Cotton Kharif Farmer Maharashtra
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Vidarbha in eastern Maharashtra is India's most densely farmed cotton belt, covering Nagpur, Amravati, Yavatmal, Wardha, Akola, and Washim districts. The region produces Bt cotton on black (regur) soil but faces the crisis of farmer debt, erratic rainfall, and volatile cotton prices. Cotton is a kharif cash crop and the primary livelihood for over 40 lakh farming families. The region gained national attention for farmer suicides linked to crop failure and input costs, driving welfare scheme interventions.
