Udvada and Parsi Heritage of Valsad District
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Valsad district is historically significant in Parsi (Zoroastrian) heritage as the location of Udvada, home to the Iranshah atash behram, the holiest fire temple in the Parsi faith. The sacred fire at Udvada has burned continuously for over 1,000 years since Parsi refugees from Iran established it here after fleeing Islamic persecution. The atash behram (fire temple) is a whitewashed building in Udvada village, with the sacred fire maintained by priestly families (dasturjis) who use ritually pure sandalwood and specific fragrant woods as fuel. Entry to the inner sanctum is restricted to initiated Zoroastrians. The Parsi community's settlement in Valsad and south Gujarat introduced new agricultural crops (particularly tobacco, which they traded), brought Persian architectural elements into local domestic architecture, and contributed to the local economy through trade and later industry. Udvada's heritage tourism attracts Parsi visitors from Mumbai, Gujarat, and the global diaspora.
