Vaishali Muzaffarpur Litchi Cooperative Bihar

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Vaishali and Muzaffarpur districts of Bihar together form the Shahi litchi belt, producing the famed Shahi litchi variety that received GI certification in 2018 as the sweetest and most aromatic litchi variety grown anywhere in the world. The floodplain alluvial soil of the Gandak river basin in Muzaffarpur and Vaishali creates ideal conditions for litchi cultivation, with the trees fruiting from May to June in a short two-week window that requires rapid harvest and transport to market. Litchi cooperative societies and the Bihar government ATMA scheme support growers in post-harvest cold chain management and packaging for air-freighted export to the UAE, UK, and Singapore. The export-quality Shahi litchi brings premium prices compared to domestic market varieties. Vaishali district also carries historical significance as the site of the world first democratic republic under the Vajjian Confederacy and the birthplace of Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. The cooperative model enables small litchi growers to pool resources for cold storage and transport.
