Gartang Gali: Historic Tibetan Trade Route Uttarkashi

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Gartang Gali in Uttarkashi district is a remarkable ancient wooden walkway carved into sheer cliff faces along the Jadh Ganga river valley, part of the historic trade route connecting the Indian plains with Tibet through the Nelang valley. Merchants and pilgrims used this route for centuries to access the Tibetan plateau carrying salt, wool, and herbs from Tibet while returning with grain, spices, and manufactured goods. The wooden planks anchored into rock with iron pegs required regular maintenance by trading communities who depended on the route. After 1962 border closure the route fell into disuse but has been restored as a heritage trekking trail. Traditional knowledge of mountain navigation, river crossing techniques, and high-altitude survival embedded in this route represents the accumulated wisdom of generations of trans-Himalayan traders.
