Kaudia Forest and Traditional Timber Architecture Dehradun
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The sal and shisham forests around Dehradun provided premium timber for construction across northern India for centuries. Traditional Garhwali timber-frame architecture uses heavy timber posts, beams, and brackets with infill of stone or mud creating structures resilient to earthquakes. Carved wooden windows with lattice screens (Jharokhas) allow ventilation while providing visual privacy. Door frames with carved lintels featuring deities, floral motifs, and protective symbols mark the threshold between outside and inside worlds. The Forest Research Institute campus at Dehradun with its heritage colonial buildings incorporating local stone and timber demonstrates the meeting of British and traditional building techniques. Contemporary builders in Dehradun are reviving timber-frame techniques for earthquake-resistant construction.
