Auli Ski Resort and Mountain Sports Heritage Chamoli

Auli in Chamoli district at 2500-3050 metres is India's premier ski resort offering slopes overlooking the magnificent Nanda Devi massif. Traditional shepherd communities used these slopes seasonally for summer grazing; the transformation to ski resort represents an evolution of mountain land use. The Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam developed ski infrastructure from the 1980s with ropeway connections from Joshimath making winter access feasible. Local youth trained as ski instructors and mountain guides blend technical skiing skills with traditional knowledge of mountain terrain, snow conditions, and weather patterns. The Auli ski trail network designed around natural topography respects the landscape while providing world-class skiing experience. The annual National Winter Games held here develops competitive skiing talent.
