Kapkot Valley Pastoral and Wool Traditions Bageshwar
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Kapkot valley in Bageshwar district represents traditional pastoral systems where sheep and goat herding communities move seasonally between lower winter pastures and high-altitude summer bugyals. The Saryu and Pindar river valleys support these transhumant routes. Pashmina-producing goats raised at high altitudes contribute fine wool to the regional textile economy. Traditional shepherd knowledge of pasture management, animal health, seasonal weather patterns, and route navigation through mountain terrain represents specialised ecological knowledge. Community institutions regulate access to communal grazing lands preventing overgrazing. Wool processing from shearing through combing, spinning, dyeing, and weaving remains primarily a home industry in pastoral communities of Bageshwar.
