Coconut Cultivation and Toddy Tapping Tradition of Tumkur
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Tumkur district is Karnataka's coconut heartland, with its red sandy soils and moderate rainfall ideal for coconut palm cultivation. The district produces both dry coconut (copra) and fresh drinking coconuts for the Bengaluru metropolitan market. Alongside commercial cultivation, the traditional practice of toddy tapping (neera collection) by Idiga community toddy tappers is central to rural Tumkur's social life. Tappers climb the palms at dawn and dusk using a braided rope girdle, collect the sap from incised inflorescences, and sell the fresh sweet neera as a cooling drink or process it into palm sugar (sharkara). Fresh unfermented neera is recognised as a nutritious health drink and is marketed through Karnataka government cooperative kiosks.
