Vazhaipoo Vadai — Banana Flower Fritter Food Tradition of Tiruppur
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Vazhaipoo Vadai (banana flower fritters) is a beloved snack and festival food of the Tiruppur and Kongu region, made from the inner florets of banana flowers (inflorescence) which are finely chopped and mixed with chana dal, red chilli, fennel, and salt. The mixture is shaped into patties and shallow-fried in sesame or groundnut oil. Banana flower is valued in traditional nutrition for its high iron and fibre content, and is recommended in Siddha and folk medicine for anaemia, particularly in women. Banana plants are widely grown in home gardens and small holdings across Tiruppur district, making the flower freely available. The fritters are sold by street vendors outside factories in Tiruppur's knitwear industrial areas as a popular workers' snack.
