Thrissur Smallholder Rubber Tapping Hevea Latex Kerala

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Thrissur district in Kerala's central zone has one of the highest concentrations of smallholder rubber cultivation in India, with one to three-acre plots maintained by Onam-period cultivators who tap Hevea brasiliensis trees daily for latex collection using the traditional half-spiral tapping technique. Tapping involves making a half-spiral cut on the bark at a 30-degree downward angle with the tapping knife, following the laticifer vessel alignment to maximise latex flow, with a fresh cut made every two days allowing two-day bark renewal on alternating panels. Each mature tree yields 250-300 grams of fresh latex per tapping session, coagulated with formic acid in field cups and rolled through a mangal coagulum roller. Dried sheets are sold at Rubber Board buying centres in Chalakudy, Irinjalakuda, and Thrissur town. Kerala's Rubber Board provides grafting knife sets, coagulant subsidy, and clonal high-yield planting material to Thrissur smallholders through Rubber Producers' Society grants. Thrissur's rubber smallholders are organised into the Kerala Rubber Producers' Society for pooled marketing and price negotiation at Kottayam commodity exchange.
