Thrissur Pooram Elephant Bronze Casting Craft Kerala
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Thrissur district is the cultural capital of Kerala — home to the Thrissur Pooram (Parisshakalam temple festival in April-May) that is India's most spectacular temple festival, featuring 15 caparisoned elephants on each side in a symmetrical alignment with simultaneous parasol changing contests, percussion ensemble (melam) duels between two teams of 100+ musicians, and an evening fireworks display that draw 100,000+ spectators. The district's Mannuthy-Irinjalakuda belt is Kerala's bronze casting (ashtadhatu — eight-metal alloy) heritage zone where hereditary Asari craftsmen cast Kerala's iconic bronze lamps (nilavilakku), urns (cheena chatti), and dance figures using the lost-wax process. Thrissur's rubber plantations form the eastern belt of the district transitioning to Palakkad, and the district produces the highest coconut yield per acre of any Kerala district.
