Tawang Monpa Buddhist Carpet Monastery Yak Herding Arunachal
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Tawang district in extreme northwest Arunachal Pradesh at 3,000m+ altitude is the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama (Tsangyang Gyatso) and home to the Tawang Monastery — one of Asia's largest Buddhist monasteries (established 1681), the largest in India — belonging to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The Monpa people of Tawang weave the Monpa carpet with geometric Tibetan Buddhist patterns on traditional looms, producing one of Northeast India's most prized handloom textiles. Yak herding at 4,000m+ altitude provides dairy (yak butter, churpi dried cheese), wool, and transport for Monpa communities. Tawang borders Tibet (China) and Bhutan, and the district is strategically significant as India's forward position in the 1962 border war zone.
