Dhodiya Tribal Embroidery of Tapi

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Dhodiya tribal community of Tapi district produces a distinctive embroidery tradition using cross-stitch and chain-stitch in vivid silk thread on cotton cloth. Dhodiya women's embroidery features highly stylised bird (especially parrot) and flower motifs arranged in geometric grid compositions on sarees, blouses, and shoulder bags. The colour palette uses gold, red, green, and royal blue on black or white ground. Dhodiya embroidery is a marker of community identity: specific design elements distinguish Dhodiya work from neighbouring Vasava, Gamit, or Konkani tribal embroideries. Commercially produced Dhodiya embroidered items are sold at craft fairs and through NGO marketing programmes. The Tapi district's relatively better infrastructure compared to Narmada and Chhota Udaipur has created market access enabling Dhodiya artisan groups to operate as formal producer cooperatives. Younger Dhodiya women are adapting traditional embroidery into accessories for urban fashion markets.
