Serchhip Mizoram Ginger Cooperative Export
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Serchhip district in Mizoram is a major ginger-producing area where Mizo farmers grow high-curcumin Mizo ginger on jhum fallow and settled plots at five hundred to fifteen hundred metres elevation. Mizoram ginger is a distinct variety with thin skin and intensely pungent flavour. Cooperative farmers in Serchhip collect harvested rhizomes, clean and grade by size, and pack for sale to Guwahati and Kolkata spice traders. Organic ginger certification from Serchhip cooperative society has opened export channels to Japan and South Korea where Mizo ginger is prized for its essential oil content. State Horticulture Department provides rhizome seed subsidy and cold storage access. Serchhip cooperative also processes ginger into dried powder and ginger candy for domestic market.
