Bagheli Chanderi Silk Trade Route and Textile Heritage of Satna
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Satna has historically been a node in the Chanderi silk trade route running from the weaving town of Chanderi through Sagar and Satna to Bengal and Orissa markets. Merchants from Satna merchant communities — Marwari, Baniya, and Muslim cloth traders — maintained warehouses and wholesale depots through which Chanderi fabric transited. The Satna market distinguished between different grades of Chanderi by thread count, warp-weft ratio, and the particular lustre produced by specific yarn-twisting methods. Local cotton saris woven in Satna using pit looms served the household market while finer Chanderi was reserved for gifting and ceremonial use. The textile trade calendar followed the wedding and festival season, with peak procurement occurring in October–January for Maghi and Akha Teej celebrations.
