Sangrur Giddha Folk Dance Women Punjab
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Giddha is the women's counterpart to Bhangra, a circle dance performed by women of Malwa Punjab in which participants take turns performing boliyan — improvisational two-line verses that comment on marriage, mother-in-law relations, and village social life — while the group claps and sings the chorus. Sangrur district's Malwa belt villages are known for their strong giddha tradition at Teej, Teeyan, and wedding celebrations, with women's giddha teams competing at district melas. Giddha costumes feature Patiala salwar, phulkari dupatta, and heavy silver jewellery, and performance quality is judged on the sharpness of footwork and the wit of the boliyan.
