Sangrur Bhangra Dhol Drum Harvest Dance

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Bhangra originated as a harvest celebration dance in the wheat fields of Malwa Punjab, and Sangrur district's rural men's Bhangra groups are considered among the most authentic practitioners of the Malwa regional style, distinguished by powerful lung jumps (latti), vigorous shoulder shaking, and the sharp counterbeat of the chimta iron tongs against the dhol beat. Village Bhangra troupes in Sangrur compete at the annual Kila Raipur Sports Festival and perform at vaisakhi melas celebrating the wheat harvest in April. Sangrur's agricultural community sees Bhangra as an expression of farming identity rather than a performance art.
