Patancheru Industrial Zone and Pharmaceutical Heritage of Sangareddy
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Patancheru-Bollaram industrial zone in Sangareddy district adjacent to Hyderabad is one of India's largest pharmaceutical and bulk drug manufacturing clusters, hosting over 400 pharmaceutical manufacturing units. The zone's emergence from the 1970s transformed Sangareddy into a significant industrial district while creating serious environmental challenges — effluent from bulk drug manufacturing contaminated the Nakkavagu stream and contributed to the famous 'Patancheru pollution' case studied by international environmental researchers. Traditional communities' resistance to pollution led to landmark legal precedents in Indian environmental law. The pharmaceutical industry's proximity to Hyderabad's research institutions and Sangareddy's land availability created the specific conditions for the cluster's growth.
