Servarayan Temple Dravidian Architecture of Shevaroy Hills
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Servarayan (Siva-Parvati) temple atop the Shevaroy Hills in Salem's Yercaud is an ancient Dravidian shrine at 1,623 metres elevation, accessible by a winding road and foot trail. The temple's architecture follows the Dravidian tradition with a modest granite gopuram and sanctum, but incorporates hill-specific construction adaptations such as low-pitched stone roofs designed to withstand heavy monsoon rain and mist. The hilltop site is associated with the Yaduvar tribal communities' pre-Brahminic religious practices, and tribal ritual elements are still incorporated in the annual festival. The lake adjacent to the temple — formed by a natural depression — is considered sacred and feeds the hill's perennial springs. Yercaud lake and its temple complex attract hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and tourists annually.
