Sahebganj Rajmahal Formation Plant Fossils Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

The Rajmahal Hills of Sahebganj district contain one of India's most significant paleobotanical fossil records, with the 200-million-year-old Rajmahal Formation preserving Gondwana-era plant fossils including Glossopteris and Gangamopteris that link India's geological history to the ancient supercontinent. The Geological Survey of India maintains research stations in Sahebganj that document these fossils, which are among the oldest in the Indian subcontinent and of global importance to understanding angiosperm evolution. The fossiliferous basalt outcrops of the Rajmahal Hills are accessible to science tourism visitors who are guided by GSI-trained naturalists through the district's fossil sites.
