Sabarkantha district in north Gujarat on the Aravalli hills border is a tribal (Bhil and Gamit) dominated area where honey collection from cliff colonies and forest bee hives, maize cultivation on the hill slopes, and dairy farming with indigenous Kankrej cattle are the primary livelihoods. Himmatnagar, the district headquarters, is a significant diamond processing centre with cutting and polishing units that employ artisans from the Saurashtra diamond polishing community. Sabarkantha's Polo Forest — a medieval Jain and Hindu temple complex in dense forest on the Harnav river — is a heritage eco-tourism destination attracting visitors from Ahmedabad for weekend trekking.
