Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango Konkan Maharashtra GI Heritage
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Ratnagiri Alphonso (Hapus) mango, grown exclusively in the laterite coastal soil of Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Raigad districts of the Konkan coast, is considered the world finest mango for its saffron-orange colour, rich saffron aroma, fiberless flesh, and extraordinary sweetness at Brix levels of 14-22. Alphonso mango trees are grafted (kalam) and trained in traditional orchard systems maintained by Konkan families for generations. GI certification protects Ratnagiri Alphonso. Mango season is April-June. Cooperative societies in Ratnagiri manage grading, cold storage, and direct air freight to Dubai, UK, and Japan for premium prices of Rs 1000-3000 per dozen. The mango economy supports over 50,000 farming families in coastal Maharashtra.
