Rajkot Saurashtra Groundnut Oil Cooperative Gujarat
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Rajkot district in Saurashtra, Gujarat, is the groundnut capital of India, producing Bold and Java varieties on black cotton soil. Smallholder farmers growing groundnut on rain-fed land form cooperative oil seed societies that collectively sell to oil mills. Cold-pressed groundnut oil — known as moongfali tel or peanut oil — from Rajkot cooperative mills retains rich flavour and has premium domestic market. Gujarat Cooperative Oil Seed Growers Federation GROFED procures oilseeds at MSP and processes through member mills. Groundnut husk is converted to biofuel briquettes and pressed cake goes to poultry and dairy feed. Cooperative insurance covers crop loss from unseasonal rain during harvest. Rajkot is also a major hub of groundnut confectionery — chikki, roasted peanut snacks exported across India.
