Ratnagiri district on the Konkan coast is the home of the GI-tagged Alphonso mango (Hapus) — considered the world's best mango for its rich, fiberless, saffron-orange flesh, intoxicating fragrance, and sweetness — grown exclusively on the laterite hillsides of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg between February and May using rainfed and well-watered trees. Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes are air-freighted to the UK, Europe, and the Middle East at Rs 2,500-5,000 per box, and the annual Mango Festival at Ratnagiri's Patit Pavan Mandir draws urban buyers for direct farm purchase. The Malvani (Konkan) fish curry tradition — using Konkani red chilli, coconut, kokum (Garcinia indica), and fresh mackerel, pomfret, or bombil (Bombay duck) — is one of Maharashtra's most celebrated coastal cuisines.
