Pochampally Single Ikat Silk Nalgonda Telangana
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Pochampally ikat is a resist-dyed silk and cotton fabric from Bhoodan Pochampally (now Pochampally) in Nalgonda district, Telangana, produced by pre-dyeing the warp (and in double-ikat, both warp and weft) threads in tied resist bundles before weaving so that the pattern emerges naturally from the alignment of dyed sections during weaving. Pochampally is best known for its single-ikat silk sarees in geometric patterns — diamonds, chevrons, and wave forms — in bold complementary colour combinations (peacock blue-green, red-orange, purple-yellow). The village of Pochampally gave its name to the broader Telangana-Andhra handloom ikat tradition and has GI protection. Pochampally ikat differs from Patan Patola (double-ikat) and Sambalpuri (Orissa) ikat in being primarily single-ikat silk or cotton. The Pochampally Handloom Cooperative employs 5,000+ weavers and exports to 30+ countries. UNESCO recognised the Sari of India, including Pochampally ikat, for safeguarding as intangible heritage. Bhoodan Pochampally village is the designated World Craft City for the ikat tradition.
