Stone Inlay Craft of Pithoragarh: Himalayan Artisan Heritage
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Pithoragarh district artisans practise a distinctive stone inlay craft using thin slices of locally gathered semi-precious stones and coloured mineral stones set in plaster or resin panels. The craft produces decorative wall panels, table tops, and framed art works. Stone colours include the green-grey of local slate, warm ochre of sandstone, and white calcite, arranged in geometric and floral patterns inspired by Mughal pietra dura inlay but using Himalayan materials instead of imported semi-precious stones. Traditional stone mosaic techniques were used in Kumaoni palace and temple floors, where coloured stone fragments were set in lime mortar to create durable patterned surfaces. Pithoragarh's proximity to Tibet also influences local craft: Tibetan carpet-inspired wool rug weaving and traditional thangka-influenced paintings are produced by Buddhist-influenced artisan families in border communities. Government craft development programmes provide market linkages for Pithoragarh artisans at state craft fairs.
