Patiala Salwar Pegged Trousers Tailoring
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
The Patiala salwar is a distinctive pleated trouser with 7 to 9 metres of fabric gathered into a drawstring waist and tapering to narrow ankles, originally designed for the comfort of Sikh noblewomen of the Patiala royal court. Tailors in Patiala's Adalat Bazar and Lehra Gaga stitch Patiala salwars in cotton, silk, and synthetic brocade, with the hallmark multiple pleats (patta) precisely symmetrical on both legs. The style spread nationally as a comfortable everyday garment for Punjabi women and is now mass-produced across India, though bespoke Patiala tailors are still sought for wedding-quality workmanship.
