Kozhukatta Rice Dumplings — Festive Food Tradition of Pathanamthitta

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Kozhukatta are steamed rice flour dumplings filled with sweetened grated coconut and jaggery, prepared throughout Pathanamthitta district during Vinayaka Chaturthi, Onam, and Karkidaka Vavu rituals. The rice flour dough is shaped into smooth balls around the filling and steamed in banana leaf pouches or metal steamers. Variations include savoury versions stuffed with spiced coconut and green chilli. In Pathanamthitta's Syrian Christian communities, kozhukatta adapted with semolina and sugar are prepared for Christmas. The dish requires no cooking fat, making it a wholesome ritual food. Grandmothers are considered the experts of getting the rice flour to the right consistency — neither too soft nor crumbling.
