Panipat district on the Upper Ganga-Yamuna Doab in Haryana is "the City of Weavers" — the site of three decisive battles of Indian history (1526, 1556, 1761) and the nation's largest recycled textile (shoddy) industry, where 3,000+ units process 500,000 tonnes of imported used clothing and waste textile annually into blankets, floor rugs (durrie), and reprocessed yarn. Panipat's weaving cluster produces handloom durries, woollen blankets, and "recycled cotton" fabric for India's institutional supply (railways, hospitals, army). The district's refinery (Indian Oil Panipat Refinery, 15 MMTPA) and petrochemical complex (Panipat Naphtha Cracker) are north India's major petroleum processing assets.
