Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Palani Panchamrit is a GI-tagged ritual food preparation from the Palani Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy temple in Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu — a sacred mixture of five natural ingredients (panchabhuta foods) prepared daily in the temple kitchen for the abhishekam (ritual bathing) of the deity and distributed as prasad to pilgrims. The Palani Panchamrit comprises banana, tender coconut, honey, milk, and dhal (lentil) mixed in precise proportions under the supervision of temple priests, and is prepared in large batches using produce sourced from temple-registered farms in the Palani hills. The formula and preparation method are protected by GI as being unique to Palani temple traditions. The Palani Panchamrit has achieved recognition as a health food: the combination of natural fruits, honey, and lentil in specific proportions is consistent with Ayurvedic food classification. The Panchamrit is packaged in temple-authorised sealed packets and sold to pilgrims as a take-home prasad product. The Palani hills (Palni Hills) surrounding the temple also produce a range of agricultural products including cardamom, banana varieties (Palani Kadali), and hill honey that supply the temple kitchen procurement. Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Devasthanam manages the Panchamrit production and distribution as a GI-protected temple product.
