Navalgund Cotton Durrie Dharwad Karnataka

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Navalgund durries are flat-woven cotton floor coverings from Navalgund town in Dharwad district, Karnataka, known for their distinctive bold geometric designs in vibrant colour combinations woven in supplementary weft technique on pit looms. The designs include traditional Navalgund motifs: the double-headed eagle (gandaberunda), elephant border, and tree-of-life pattern in contrasting colour schemes of red-black, blue-yellow, and green-orange. Navalgund durries have GI protection. The weaving is practised by Devanga and Neykara weaver communities in Navalgund, which is one of Karnataka's most important handloom centres. The Navalgund Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society supplies national furnishing retailers and export buyers. Navalgund durries are used as traditional gifts at weddings and festivals in north Karnataka communities. Contemporary Navalgund production has expanded from floor durries to wall hangings, yoga mats, and cushion covers for urban home decor market. The craft is supported under Karnataka's NHDC and government cluster development scheme.
