Vasava Tribal Paddy Cultivation in Narmada

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Vasava (Vasavi) tribal community of Narmada district, concentrated in the Narmada and Tapi river valleys, practises traditional paddy cultivation that forms the basis of their food culture and ritual calendar. Vasava farmers maintain traditional paddy varieties adapted to the local soil and rainfall, sowing in June-July and harvesting in November. The cultivation cycle is accompanied by ritual observances: planting ceremonies invoke the earth goddess, the first harvest sheaf is offered to the ancestors, and new grain cannot be consumed before the akha teej festival. Paddy is processed in wooden dhekli (manual rice pounder) to produce hand-pounded rice with higher nutritional value than machine-milled rice. Rice beer (mahudi) made from fermented cooked rice is the ritual beverage of Vasava weddings, funerals, and deity worship. The Vasava community's traditional agricultural festivals are living calendars of ecological knowledge.
