Mysore Silk Mulberry Sericulture Karnataka Ramanagara

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Ramanagara district, known as Resham Nagara (silk city), is the largest silk cocoon market in Asia, where over 100,000 farming families raise Bombyx mori silkworms on mulberry leaves in 60,000 hectares of mulberry gardens. Farmers harvest cocoons five times a year, each 45-day rearing cycle yielding 50-70 kg cocoons per 100 eggs. Cooperative silk reeling units reel cocoons into raw silk thread at the Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) in Mysuru. Mysore Silk — the fabric woven from KSIC raw silk at the Mysore Silk Factory — is used for Mysore Silk sarees with distinctive gold zari border and is a GI product. Royal Mysore Silk pieces are worn at state ceremonies across Karnataka.
