Mathura Agra Mithai Confectionery Belt Western UP
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Western Uttar Pradesh — particularly the Mathura-Agra-Vrindavan belt — forms India's most concentrated mithai (confectionery) production cluster, where hereditary halwai communities produce the famous Mathura peda, Agra petha, Vrindavan rabri, Mathura tilkut (sesame sweet), Agra dalmoth, and dozens of milk-based sweets anchored in the pilgrimage economy of the Krishna janmabhoomi religious circuit. The confectionery belt benefits from proximity to Gir and Sahiwal cow dairy supply from the Braj region, a centuries-old temple economy that created sustained demand for high-quality prasad, and artisanal halwai communities that have maintained recipes as hereditary craft across generations. The Mathura-Agra mithai industry generates thousands of crores annually and employs 200,000+ workers. ODOP schemes for both Agra (petha) and Mathura (peda) provide packaging upgrade, cold chain, and e-commerce support for national gifting market expansion. GI tags for Mathura peda and Agra petha create brand distinction in premium retail. The Braj mithai heritage has become a domestic food tourism attraction drawing food writers and documentary filmmakers.
