Mansa Phulkari Bagh Full Embroidery Shawl

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Bagh, meaning garden, is the most elaborate form of phulkari where the entire khaddar cloth surface is covered with interlocking silk floats leaving no visible ground fabric, creating an all-over flower garden effect. In Mansa's Malwa villages, bagh shawls are made by groups of women embroidering together as a collective social activity, with each woman responsible for one section of the pattern. A full bagh requires 80 to 120 hours of work with several hundred metres of silk floss thread, making it a significant material investment; in village custom, a bagh must be gifted by the maternal uncle at a niece's wedding, making its production a family obligation.
