Godavari Gorge Ecology and Forest Corridor of Mancherial

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Godavari river cuts a spectacular gorge through the Sahyadri spur hills in Mancherial district — one of the most scenic river landscapes in Telangana. The forested slopes on both sides of the gorge form part of the Kawal-Pranahita wildlife corridor. The forest supports teak, bamboo, and mixed deciduous species with populations of tigers, leopards, and wild dogs. The river gorge provides critical year-round water access for wildlife from the surrounding dry plateau. Traditional communities (Koya, Gond) living in the gorge fringe have detailed knowledge of the river's flood behaviour, fish spawning cycles, and the forest's seasonal food production — knowledge essential for their sustainable forest and fisheries management.
