Singareni Coalfields and Coal Mining Heritage of Mancherial

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Mancherial district is the heart of the Godavari coalfields — one of India's most important coal-producing basins. The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), established in 1945 and now the largest coal-producing company in South India, operates mines across Mancherial, Peddapalli, and Karimnagar districts. The coal deposits here are part of a Permian-era Gondwana coal seam deposited 250–290 million years ago. Coal mining communities in Mancherial have developed a distinct working-class culture — trade union traditions, cooperative stores, workers' welfare facilities, and a strong tradition of Telugu progressive literature associated with Marxist politics. The Singareni coal enables the thermal power plants supplying most of Telangana's electricity.
