Coal Belt Paddy Agriculture and Godavari Command Area, Mancherial
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Despite its industrial character, Mancherial district has significant agricultural land in the Godavari command area irrigated by the Sri Ram Sagar Project's distributary canals. The intersection of coal mining and agriculture is unusual — the same farmers who lease coal rights for deep mining continue paddy and cotton cultivation on the surface above the mines. Paddy cultivation in Mancherial's canal command area uses standard Sona Masuri and BPT varieties. The agricultural cooperative societies in coal belt villages have played an important role in maintaining farmers' rights during land acquisition processes for mine expansion, serving as collective negotiating platforms.
