Ludhiana district is Punjab's industrial capital — the "Manchester of India" — producing 90% of India's woollen knitwear (hosiery: sweaters, thermal wear, socks) in a cluster of 50,000+ units in the Focal Point industrial zone; 70% of India's bicycle and bicycle parts (Hero, Avon, Atlas brands originate here); and a major textile spinning and dyeing industry. Ludhiana's tractor spare parts industry and agricultural machinery manufacturing supply Punjab's mechanised farming sector. The district's canal-irrigated farmland grows wheat and paddy, but it is the industrial contribution that defines Ludhiana's economic identity. The district has a large Bihari and UP migrant labour population working in knitwear and cycle factories.
