Lohardaga Bauxite Mining Oraon Tribal Rights

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Lohardaga district sits on one of Jharkhand's richest bauxite deposits, mined by Hindalco for aluminium production, with the mining operations overlapping with forest land held under Oraon tribal community rights. The district's bauxite plateau tops are ecologically significant water recharge zones — the laterite bauxite layer holds monsoon rainwater that feeds springs and streams used by valley farming communities downstream. Tribal gram sabhas in Lohardaga have contested bauxite mine expansions using PESA rights and Environment Impact Assessment public hearings, arguing that bauxite mining destroys the hydrology that sustains their agriculture, creating a development paradox between industrial mineral wealth and tribal water security.
