Kumbh Mela Prayagraj Pilgrimage Tradition

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj (Allahabad) is the largest peaceful gathering of human beings on earth, held every twelve years at the confluence (Triveni Sangam) of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the invisible Saraswati rivers, with the most auspicious bathing dates (Shahi Snan) drawing over ten crore pilgrims in a single day during the Purna Kumbh. The Maha Kumbh held in January-February 2025 was reported to have drawn over sixty crore visitors over forty-five days. The astronomical basis for the Kumbh cycle involves Jupiter entering Aries while the sun enters Capricorn and the new moon aligns in Capricorn, an event computed by the Jyotirmath tradition in Prayagraj. The Akharas (monastic orders) play the central role in the Kumbh, with thirteen Shaiva and Vaishnava Akharas leading the Shahi Snan processions in prescribed precedence order on elephant and horse-mounted processions. The tent city established by the Mela Authority along the Sangam covers over 4,000 hectares and includes hospitals, power stations, roads, and police administration for the temporary city. The Kumbh Mela was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017, recognized as the largest peaceful congregation on earth embodying Hindu pilgrimage traditions.
