Tangassery Fort and Colonial Maritime Heritage of Kollam

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Tangassery in Kollam district contains the ruins of a Portuguese fort built in the early 16th century, later captured and expanded by the Dutch in 1662, and subsequently used by the British. The fort's octagonal lighthouse, still operational, was built by the British in 1902 and is one of the oldest working lighthouses on the Kerala coast. The Tangassery headland's strategic position controlling the approach to Kollam port made it a contested prize for successive colonial powers. The fort's laterite stone walls, dungeon chambers, and bastions survive in partial ruin and are maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. The surrounding fishing village of Tangassery preserves a distinct Latin Christian community descended from Portuguese-era converts, with a unique dialect blending Portuguese loanwords into Malayalam.
