Tomato Cultivation and Marketing Hub of Kolar

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Kolar district is Karnataka's largest tomato-producing region, supplying Bengaluru's wholesale vegetable market and sending consignments to major cities across India. The district's red sandy loam soil and temperate climate — cooled by elevation — produce tomatoes with firm flesh and good shelf life. The Kolar tomato market at Bangarpet and Mulbagal handles thousands of tonnes daily during the main harvest season. A distinctive feature of Kolar's tomato economy is the dramatic price volatility — when supply peaks, tomato prices can collapse to below the cost of harvesting, leading farmers to abandon roadside tomato heaps rather than pay transport costs. This volatility has driven farmer suicides and has made Kolar tomatoes a symbol of agricultural market failure in Karnataka's policy debates.
