Khurja in Bulandshahr, UP is India's pottery town, producing 50% of the country's household ceramics. Over 400 kilns produce dinnerware, wall tiles, electrical insulators, and hotel crockery. The Khurja pottery tradition dates from 16th-century Mughal artisan settlements. GI-tagged Khurja pottery is known for its distinctive blue, white, and floral glaze patterns on buff clay. The cluster exports to 30 countries and sustains 30,000 workers in kiln operation, clay preparation, and decorating.
