Khammam Koya Tribal Bamboo Forest Ecology Telangana

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Khammam district in Telangana contains the heartland of the Koya tribal homeland, where Koya and Konda Reddi communities practice bamboo-based forest ecology integrating bamboo cultivation, harvesting, and craft into forest-fringe agricultural cycles along the Godavari tributaries. Locally called veduru pani (bamboo work), the tradition involves managing communal bamboo groves as collective property, harvesting culms in rotation leaving at least one-third of culms to regenerate, and processing bamboo for baskets, roofing, agricultural implements, and fish traps. Koya weavers produce the petike storage basket and the jalla fish trap used on Godavari backwaters, which are sold at weekly haats in Bhadrachalam and Kothagudem. The Bhadrachalam subdivision has the highest concentration of community forest rights holders for bamboo groves under the Forest Rights Act 2006, with patta certificates enabling cooperative bamboo extraction for sale to TRIFED-registered agents. These communities also practice seasonal bamboo shoot harvesting for the fermented bamboo shoot pickle consumed across the tribal belt.
