Meghalaya is India's third-largest ginger (Zingiber officinale) producing state, with East Garo Hills, West Garo Hills, and Ri-Bhoi districts cultivating naturally organic ginger on hill slopes with jhum (shifting) and settled cultivation. Meghalaya ginger is known for its high oleoresin and volatile oil content, used in ginger ale, pickles, essential oil, and Ayurvedic preparations. It commands a premium in the organic export market.
