Karnal Western Yamuna Canal Irrigation System
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Karnal district is traversed by the Western Yamuna Canal's main channel and its distributaries, a gravity irrigation system constructed between 1817 and 1874 that transformed the Haryana plain from a semi-arid landscape to India's most productive wheat-rice zone. The canal system operates on a warabandi rotation schedule that allocates water to each field for a fixed time per week, managed by village-level canal user associations. Karnal's agricultural prosperity is inseparable from the canal system, and the district hosts the WYC headquarters at Munak that manages water distribution for 1.5 million hectares of farmland across Haryana.
