Kalisil River and Water Systems of Karauli

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Kalisil river, a tributary of the Chambal, flows through Karauli district providing water for irrigation and sustaining riparian ecosystems. The Panchana dam on the Kalisil, one of Rajasthan's oldest large water bodies, was built in the 1950s and serves as a drinking water reservoir for Karauli and surrounding areas. Traditional talabs (tanks) dotted across Karauli's villages were built by local rulers and community labour over centuries. Many of these tanks have revived through participatory watershed development under MNREGA, restoring groundwater levels in a chronically water-scarce region. Seasonal rivers such as Gambhir and Bhadrawati supplement Kalisil's flow. Fishing communities (Dheemar) practise traditional net fishing in the Panchana reservoir, harvesting catla, rohu, and mrigal carp using hand-woven cotton nets.
